Human Brain Project

The Human Brain Project (HBP) is a project that aims to build a complete, biologically realistic, simulation of the human brain within a supercomputer. The simulation will be realistic right down to the molecular level. It is believed that an exascale supercomputer will be required to achieve this.

Blue Brain Project

Initially the simulations will be performed on the IBM Blue Gene/P supercomputer at Julich in Germany. The simulations will then move to larger supercomputers once they become available.

The HBP is the planned successor to the Blue Brain Project. Currently, as of November 2011, it is half-way through a one-year project design phase. Should the project be selected for a flagship EU research grant, it will receive around €1 billion in funding through until 2023. The selection is due to be made in the second half of 2012, with the project to begin in earnest at the start of 2013.
